The Car Scrappage Scheme

Older cars can pose a threat to the environment. Ideally they should be scrapped and replaced by newer and more fuel efficient cars. This is one of the driving forces behind the car scrappage scheme created by the government. When you scrap an eligible car and buy a new one you could get £2,000 off the OTR price. The idea is great although we at The Car Breakers Gravesend believe there are flaws in the government's plan. For one thing, the scheme dictates to you which new cars you can purchase in exchange for scrapping your old car. Additionally, the old car you are having scrapped must meet the strict criteria set by the government. We have listed below the requirements for the scheme.

The old, The Car Breakers must:

  • Have been registered to you continuously for at least 12 calendar months
  • Have a valid tax disc when the order of your new vehicle is placed
  • Be registered on or before the 31st August 1999
  • Have a valid MOT (or within 14 days of expiry) on the old car at the time you order the new one
  • Be insured when you order your new vehicle
  • Have a United Kingdom address on the registration certificate (also known as V5C)
  • Be a small car or van weighing no more than 3.5 tonnes
  • Be registered in your name with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or Driver and Vehicle Agency

Of course, few cars meet these strict requirements. Many people in Gravesend who had hoped to profit from scrapping their car have been disappointed to learn that they did not meet the requirements.
